The "first hospital," and the original St. Michael's College, were saved, though it abutted a larger building which was completely destroyed. It was in this building that the housekeeper and servants lived. It served as St. Joseph's Preparatory School for several years before being moved to its present site in 1931. This most amazing building had escaped, almost miraculously, fires in 1878 and 1919. It was the first rectory in Chatham, the first episcopal residence, the first St. Michael's college, the first convent, and the first hospital. It served as a quarantine hospital in the early part of the century. It then filled in as housekeeper and servants' quarters for St. Thomas College. After several more years as St. Joseph's Preparatory School, it was made into a museum in 1969, through the efforts of Sister Loretta Gaffney, to mark the Sisters' Centennial in Chatham.
