Our building, the first St. Michael's Rectory, constructed in 1846 by Rev. John Sweeney, is now located on its fourth site behind the present St. Michael's Basilica and Rectory.

The historical significance of the old St. Michael's Rectory was perhaps first noted and appreciated by Bishop James Rogers and later Bishop Louis J. O'Leary, Auxiliary Bishop of Chatham (1914 - 1930). Bishop O'Leary referred to this building as "the Cradle of all parochial institutions."

The first and second sites were on the grounds of the St. Michael's Building of the New Brunswick Community College, Miramichi. (brown brick building on University Avenue).

Major restoration and renovations took place from 1979 -1981. Inspiration and encouragement for this project came from the writings and correspondence of early bishops, priests and Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph. Repairs and repainting were again necessary in 1998.
